TSMC may expand its factory site in Taichung, central Taiwan for additional 2nm process capacity, according to company chairman Mark Liu.

TSMC disclosed previously plans to build its 2nm wafer fab in the Baoshan area in Hsinchu, northern Taiwan, which will be the major production base for the foundry's 2nm process.

If the 2nm fab in Hsinchu does not have sufficient capacity to meet customer demand, TSMC will consider building additional 2nm process capacity at its plant in Taichung, Liu indicated.

TSMC has kicked off mass production of 5nm chips at its manufacturing site in southern Taiwan in 2020, said Liu, adding that the site will be ready for 3nm process manufacturing in 2022. TSMC will have 60-70% of manufacturing capacity located at the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) in Tainan between 2024 and 2025, Liu continued.

Nevertheless, TSMC intends to have manufacturing capacity split evenly among its factory sites in northern, central and southern Taiwan, Liu noted. TSMC remains committed to concentrating its manufacturing in Taiwan, Liu added.
