Advanced Lithium Electrochemistry (Aleees), a Taiwan-based maker of cathode materials of LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries, is likely to benefit from cooperation on LFP batteries between Tesla and China-based battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), as only Aleees and Japan-based Sumitomo Electric Industries hold international patents concerning such cathode materials, according to industry sources.
CATL is a supplier of ternary batteries for Tesla currently, and their cooperation will reportedly be extended to LFP batteries, the sources said. This is possibly because Tesla will step into the energy storage market segment dominated by LFP batteries and will offer electric cars equipped with LFP battery packs in the China market to lower prices to cope with shrinking demand, the sources noted.
Aleees supplies cathode materials for LG Chem for its LFP battery sales in South Korea and Europe, for CATL to sell LFP batteries used in energy storage systems in the US, the sources indicated.
Aleees is reportedly a partner for Japan-based GS Yuasa, which is replacing lead-acid batteries with LFP ones and a battery supplier for Toyota Motor, the sources said.
