Intel looks to 5G, AI for future growth

The emerging 5G and AI applications will be driving Intel's growth over the next decade, market observers believe.

Intel has failed to lead the mobile processor market despite its dominance in the PC segment. However, the chip giant is developing its portfolio for the emerging 5G and AI applications in full gear.

Intel CEO Bob Swan suggested recently that keeping its smartphone modem business would not help the company diversify its target applications in the 5G era. Intel serves only Apple in the smartphone modem business.

Intel intends to put increased focus on non-smartphone device applications, including a wide range of data-centric platforms and edge computing devices, in the 5G world while maintaining its PC and server dominance, the observers noted. The chip giant will see its growth over the next 10 years driven by robust chip demand for cloud computing and edge computing devices, including autonomous vehicles, the observers said.

AI will be another area Intel will find its future growth engine, the observers continued. Its previous acquisitions of FPGA specialist Altera, AI startup Nervana Systems, and autonomous car developer Mobileye are paving the way for the chip giant to grow its AI chip business.

Intel earlier in 2019 unveiled its first AI processor dubbed Nervana NNP-I. The chip has reportedly been adopted by Facebook. Intel with its Nervana AI portfolio and ecosystem is eyeing the global AI processor market leadership.
