Xiaomi brings Mi 9T Pro to Taiwan

Xiaomi has launched Mi 9T Pro, an upgraded version of Mi 9T, in Taiwan with availability to begin on August 27 at NT$14,999 (US$478).

Mi 9T Pro is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and features a 6.39-inch AMOLED display and a triple-lens main camera consisting of a 48-megapixel Sony IMX 586 sensor, a 13-megapixel wide angle sensor and 8-megapixel telephoto lens.

Xiaomi has been adopting a dual-brand strategy - Mi and Redmi - to promote it smartphones in the local market and has achieved significant gains, according to Yan Lau, president of Xiaomi Taiwan.

The two brands together captured a 6.5% share (Redmi 3.8%) and (Mi 2.7%) in the local market in terms of unit shipments in July, trailing just 1.1pp after fifth-ranked Huawei, which had a 6.6% share, according to data compiled by local retail channels.

Smartphone sales in Taiwan totaled 600,000 units in July, increasing 18% from the previous month, the data show. Apple ranked first with a 26% share, followed by Samsung with 22.1%, Oppo with 9.9% and Asustek with 8.6%.

To compete with rivals, Xiaomi plans to increase the number of its brick and mortar stores in Taiwan to 16 by year-end 2019, from 11 currently, Lau revealed.

Sales of Xiaomi's brick and mortar stores in Taiwan grew 81% sequentially in the first half of 2019, with smartphones and IoT devices each contributing 50% to total sales, Lau added.
