Touch panel makers General Interface Solution (GIS) and TPK Holding both have reported profits for the second quarter of 2019.

GIS saw its net profit increase 62.9% on quarter and 36.2% on year to NT$1.123 billion (US$35.67 million) or NT$3.32 per share in the second quarter although revenues declined 20.7% on year to NT$23.333 billion.

First-half 2019 net profit totaled NT$1.812 billion, up 27.1% on year. The earnings translated into an EPS of NT$5.36 for the six-month period compared to NT$4.21 a year ago.

GIS is expected to see a major pick-up in sales in the third quarter, buoyed by increasing shipments of touch modules for iPhone devices and in-display fingerprint sensing modules to Samsung Electronics, according to industry sources.

GIS also reported revenues increased nearly 30% sequentially to a six-month high of NT$9.997 billion in July. Year-to-date revenues totaled NT$62.767 billion, up 17.3% on year.

Meanwhile, TPK saw gross margin improve to 4.2% in the second quarter from 3.9% a quarter earlier, thanks to improved production efficiency. Although it still incurred an operating loss of NT$14 million in the second quarter, it managed to report NT$54 million in net profit because of foreign exchange gains.

EPS for the second quarter came to NT$0.13 compared to NT$0.06 a quarter earlier.

For the first half of 2019, net profits totaled NT$78 million or NT$0.19 per share on revenues of NT$59.608 billion.

TPK saw a good start for the third quarter by seeing its July revenues increase 24.68% on month and 34.6% on year to NT$12.53 billion. Year-to-date revenue totaled NT$72.134 billion, increasing 50.4% from a year earlier.

TPK's capex will reach NT$1.6 billion in the third quarter, up from NT$1 billion a quarter earlier. For all of 2019, the company's capex will reach NT$4 billion, company president and CEO Leo Hsieh said.
