Notebook and handset ODM Compal Electronics reportedly will undertake the production of a Google's Project Tango-based smartphone for Lenovo, according to industry sources.

Lenovo is expected to unveil the Project Tango-based smartphone at Lenovo Tech World to be held in Silicon Valley on June 9, said the sources.

The Project Tango smartphone, which supports Google's augmented reality (AR) technology, will integrate digital games and navigation functionality.

Compal declined to comment but revealed that its shipments of smart handheld devices will grow by a double-digit rate to over 40 million units in 2016. Major items will include iPad mini orders from Apple and smartphone orders from Lenovo and LeTV.

Meanwhile, Compal has begun shipping handsets from its plant in India with initial shipments reaching 100,000 units a month, the sources indicated.
