Quantum dot (QD) TVs are expected to make an impact in the TV market going into 2015 as more vendors are expected to release the technology to compete with OLED, according to market observers.
Increased models of QD-LCD TVs from Sony, TCL, LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics are expected to hit the market in 2015 due to their wide color gamut advantages that produce image quality comparable to OLED.
OLED TV panels still face high material costs and low production yields, resulting in high end-market pricing. Shipments for the technology have been limited over the last couple of years and leading Korea vendors have turned to Ultra HD LCD TV production and sales in order to maintain a foothold in the high-end TV market.
Shifting to QD LCD TVs would allow the vendors to maintain influence in the TV segment as they continue to develop OLED TV technology, which the Korea vendors still aim to develop in upcoming years as pricing comes down.
Industry observers estimate the vast majority of QD TVs released in 2015 will be for sizes 55-inch and above.
