Digitimes Research: 40.1% of handset panels to have better than 300ppi resolution

Jen-Chieh Yang, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei

In 2014, approximately 40.1% of handset panels will have a resolution above 300ppi, up 8.3 percentage points on year, according to Digitimes Research.

The percentage includes handsets sized 4.7- to 6.44-inches, many of which will even have above 400ppi resolution. The increased resolution comes as demand in emerging economies for higher-end smartphones is on the rise, particularly in China, said Digitimes Research.

Amid the competition for high-end panel production specifically in the LTPS segment, Taiwan panel makers are finding it hard to meet demand as they are not expanding production capacity at the rate of other panel makers in the market. Therefore, Digitimes Research estimates that Taiwan panel makers' global handset panel production proportion will drop from 53.4% in 2013 to 47.8% in 2014.
