LCD driver IC vendors including Novatek Microelectronics and Himax Technologies are likely to see their shipments of eDP (embedded DisplayPort) LCD driver ICs increase significantly in 2013 as more notebook brands are expected to switch from LVDS to eDP interfaces, according to industry sources.

The penetration rate of eDP LCD driver ICs in the notebook segment is expected to climb to 30% in 2013 compared 10% in the previous year, with business notebooks having a high an adoption rate for eDP driver chips as these models are less price sensitive, said the sources.

While notebook vendors may adopt more eDP 1.2 driver ICs in 2013, they will also utilize eDP 1.3 driver chips for models using Full HD displays, said sources, noting that eDP 1.3 driver ICs will account for less than 3% of total eDP driver ICs shipped in 2013.
