Taiwan-based motor maker Kuo Shuay Industrial has obtained certification from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and became the fifth firm in the world to obtain certification for its motor efficiency laboratory.

According to the firm, the US and Canada hope to strengthen reliability of product efficiency by forcing motor makers to go through tests conducted by recognized laboratories or third-party certification agencies.

The firm has been determined to invest in the R&D of products that reduce power consumption and the use of material, and it has also constructed the first motor safety standard testing laboratory that fits the UL requirement in the Asia Pacific region. The firm has further constructed an UL-certified motor efficiency testing lab to ensure the quality of its motors.

According to UL Taiwan, traditional motors are high in power consumption, which rapidly depletes energy, hence the US and Canada have been requiring motors to be energy efficient. UL Taiwan added that violators will suffer heavy fines in the two countries.

UL standard requires firms to have superior laboratory environment, certified technicians, comprehensive equipment, limited access to the labs, good management, material procurement, testing, and storage procedures. In addition, the lab needs to have a system to weed out low quality samples in order to obtain the UL certification before product testing.
