Taiwan-based LED firm Unity Opto has reported July consolidated revenues of NT$785 million (US$26.22 million), a record high figure representing an on-month increase of 10.1% and an on-year increase of 51%.

According to the firm, penetration of LED backlight sources continues to increase significantly in 2012. Penetration rate was 40% in 2011 and has been increased to 65-70% in recent months. The firm believes third-quarter penetration will be around 70% and the figure will continue to increase in the fourth quarter.

Unity Opto noted that TV brands from South Korea, Taiwan and China have been introducing new models. Taiwan-based TV brands plan to increase commercial production of direct-lit LED TVs in the third quarter, said Unity Opto.

Due to an energy-saving subsidy program introduced by China's government, China-based TV brands will introduce new models before the fourth quarter, according to industry sources. Industry sources added that TV models that fit the energy-saving requirements may obtain subsidies from CNY200-400 (US$31.39-62.78) per unit.

In addition, Japan-based TV makers have been trying to lower production costs by increasing OEM orders of LED backlight sources to Taiwan-based firms.

For LED lighting, Unity Opto noted that it has been receiving orders from Taiwan-based distributors of consumer electronics.

The firm expects revenues to grow in the third quarter.
