High-resolution smartphones are the new mobile phone standard

High-resolution 4- to 5-inch sized smartphones will be the standard for phone makers to compete in the future due to increasing market competition and consumer requirements.

Sources said phone makers at present are largely developing phones that have 200ppi and higher resolutions largely to compete with increasing popularity with Apple's iPhone series. Sources added that panel makers are giving pressure to phone makers to design similar panels in order to boost their panel production and avoid the over dominance of Apple's supply chain on the market.

Sources from panel makers have also reported that they will start mass producing high-resolution 5-inch touch screen panels for smartphones in July, indicating that phone companies are focusing on moving from 2- to 3-inch screens to 4- and 5-inch sized ones.

The trend comes as smart ultra-mobile devices, particularly smartphones, are becoming mainstream for consumers.
