Largan may start volume production of 10-megapixel lens modules as early as 2013

Taiwan-based Largan Precision is technologically ready to make 10-megapixel lens modules for smartphones, but because suppliers of sensing devices are still developing optimal solutions and potential clients have not yet released orders, Largan may not begin volume production until 2013, according to the company.

While mainstream the resolution smartphone rear cameras is 5-megapixel currently, Largan's shipments of 8-megapixel lens modules to smartphone vendors have been increasing since August 2011, the company pointed out.

Rear cameras in tablet PCs are 3- or 5-megapixel currently, and adoption of 8-megapixel modules is expected to begin in the fourth quarter, Largan indicated.

Largan's yield rates of 8-megapixel lens modules are lower than those for 5-megapixel ones, and it will take about three months to match the latter's yields, Largan said.
