Taiwan-based small- to medium-size LCD panel makers Giantplus Technology and Emerging Display Technology (EDT) have reported sequential drops of 9.31% and 19.42%, respectively, in their February 2010 revenues.
Giantplus reported consolidated revenues of NT$800.8 million (US$25.06 million) for February, down 9.31% sequentially from NT$883.03 million, but up 1.58% on year from NT$788.32 million, according to data from the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).
Consolidated revenues for January-February totaled NT$1.68 billion, up 26.76% on year.
Orders from first-tier handset and consumer electronics vendors started to increase significantly at the beginning of the year and further helped Giantplus' February consolidated revenues drop below 10% amid fewer work days for the month, market sources noted.
Giantplus plans to start shipping TFT-LCD projected capacitive touch panels in the second half of 2010, and expects the panels to increase ASPs and revenues, the sources said.
EDT has posted revenues of NT$235.11 million for February, down 19.42% sequentially from NT$291.76 million and down 2.45% on year from NT$241 million. Revenues for January-February were NT$526.87 million, up 13.54% on year, according to TSE data.
Unlike Giantplus, EDT is only shipping touch panel modules, mainly to China handset vendors, and expects to ship to Taiwan handset makers in 2010, the sources added. Projected capacitive touch panels currently account for about 10% of EDT's total revenues.
Both Giantplus and EDT expect the weak season to arrive early but are optimistic about their business in the first half of the year, the sources said.
