Chip sales forecast brighter in 2009, says SIA

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has revised upward its estimate of global semiconductor sales for 2009 to a 11.6% decline, resetting its previous projection of negative 21.3%. The industry group also gave more positive growth estimates for 2010 and 2011.

SIA now expects worldwide chip sales to drop to US$219.7 billion in 2009 from the prior year's US$248.6 billion, but turn to grow over the next two years.

"The new forecast is brighter than our earlier projections, reflecting an improving global economy," said SIA president George Scalise. "Unit sales of key demand drivers – including PCs and cell phones, which together account for about 60% of semiconductor demand – have been stronger than previously predicted. We remain cautiously optimistic for the longer term. The current forecast is closely tied to projections of continuing improvement in the worldwide economy."
