Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has secured set-top box (STB) IC orders from a subsidiary of China-based home appliance vendor Haier, according to industry sources in China. The foundry is also collaborating with Huawei Technologies and ZTE to tap China's networking chip market, the sources added.
Haier and Huawei are now two of TSMC's major customers, the sources noted.
United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), which is looking to acquire China-based Hejian Technology, is also vying for orders from China-based IC design houses and system vendors, according to the sources. Along with Hejian, the Taiwan-based foundry chipmaker is making its public appearance at an ongoing China IC fair - China IC 2009 - held in Suzhou from October 22-24.
Jerry Chang, vice president of Hejian, remarked that the company remains focused on the China market. Hejian will be specializing in foundry services for LCD driver ICs, embedded flash memory controllers, power management ICs and portable media player solutions. Chang said Hejian has been running at full capacity since June.
