Solar wafer maker SAS expanding capacity

, Taipei

Sino-American Silicon Products (SAS), a Taiwan-based maker of solar-grade silicon wafers, is expanding its annual production capacity to 380MWp (megawatt-peak) equivalents, with expansion to be completed by the end of September and operation to kick off in early October 2009, according to the company.

Due to a tight time schedule for the capacity expansion, SAS has arranged for the production equipment to be delivered to Taiwan by air rather than the usual method of sea transport, sources pointed out.

In addition, SAS has obtained increased orders for patterned sapphire substrates with shipments scheduled for the first quarter of 2010, the company pointed out. SAS is thus expanding its monthly production capacity from 30,000 patterned sapphire substrates currently to 60,000 units by the end of 2009 and further to 100,000 units by the end of March 2010, the company indicated.
