MediaTek's TD-SCDMA handset chips may be impacted by China Mobile's delay in its third-stage procurement project for TD-SCDMA handsets and by the fact that some major handset makers, such as TechFaith Wireless and Simcom, are giving up or downsizing their R&D teams for the locally developed standard, according to reports in Taiwan's Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) newspaper.
But the Taiwan-based IC designer believes the Chinese government will continue to push the local standad, and the company will continue its development of TD-SCDMA applications, with plans to introduce 3.5G TD-SCDMA handset chips in the second half of 2009, the paper said.
