Taiwan-based maker of amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules Sun Well Solar on November 19 obtained an IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) 61646 performance certification and an IEC 61730 safety certification from Germany-based TUV Rheinland, the first among all Taiwan-based solar makers, according to Sun Well.
Sun Well is a subsidiary of CMC Magnetics, Taiwan's largest blank optical disc maker.
The two certifications mean the quality of Sun Well's solar cell modules have attained the highest standards and will thereby enhance Sun Well's competitiveness in the global market, CMC chairman Robert Wong pointed out. In addition, the certifications will help Sun Well obtain syndicated loans to expand its production capacity, Wong indicated.
According to TUV Rheinland Taiwan, there are no more than 10 makes of a-Si thin-film PV modules around the world that have obtained certification. Five Taiwan-based makers, including Sun Well, have applied for certification.
Sun Well has a production line with a monthly capacity of 30MWp currently, and is setting up a second line with completion scheduled for June 2009, Wong indicated.
