Sony and Microsoft are showcasing their respective PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Xbox 360 game consoles at the 2006 IT Month fair currently running in Taipei from December 2-10, signaling possible intense competition in the Taiwan game console market.

The Taiwan branch of Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong is offering a daily quota of 80 PS3 consoles for sale at the exhibition, according to the branch office. Since the launch of the PS3 in Taiwan on November 17, sales of the game console have not been as hot as in has been in the US and Japan, industry sources pointed out.

Senior sales manager Grace Chou of Microsoft Taiwan's Entertainment & Device Division said that Microsoft will lead competitors by launching 160 high-definition Xbox 360 games in 37 countries by the end of the month.

In contrast, Nintendo is not exhibiting its Wii game console at the fair. The Wii will not be launched in Taiwan by the end of this year, according to Nintendo's Taiwan sales agent Hakuyu.
