Zhejiang Ghijin Tour Media, a company in charge of outsourcing 187 LED bulletin board projects in China, is looking for more suppliers in Taiwan. In addition to Ligitek Electronics, which on July 19 confirmed shipments to Zhejiang Ghijin, Chroma Group-invested DynaScan Technology has also secured an order from the company for one of its bulletin boards, according to DynaScan COO Michael Hsu.
Ligitek's four LED bulletin boards for Zhejiang Ghijin uses lamps from Nichia with each board measuring 4X7m in size and costing about NT$2 million (US$61,000) each, sources at Taiwan LED makers indicated.
Bright LED Electronics and Taiwan Oasis Technology are aggressively seeking potential partnerships with Zhejiang Ghijin. Bright LED said that it is working out details of an agreement with Zhejiang Ghijin. Taiwan Oasis claims that it is the only one among Taiwan's LED makers to provide automation facilities specifically for LED bulletin board manufacturing. Taiwan Oasis is able to ship more than 20 LED bulletin boards, based on a size of 4X7m, per month, according to the company.
In contrast, Taiwan's largest LED packaging house Everlight Electronics said that it currently has no plan to directly partner with Zhejiang Ghijin.
In addition to lamp supplier Nichia, the sources expect that Taiwan LED chipmakers may also become involved in Zhejiang Ghijin's LED bulletin board projects. As the establishment of the 187 LED bulletin boards is to be completed by the end of this year, Nichia may face a tight supply, indicated the sources. However, Taiwan LED chip suppliers may need to resolve static electricity, temperature and humidity issues, in order to secure orders from the projects, the sources commented.
Epistar, currently the leading LED chipmaker in Taiwan, stated that its monthly output of UHB (ultra-high brightness) red LED chips reaches 45 million units. The company's blue and green LED chips have been verified for the bulletin board applications, adding to its current offerings of red and yellow products, according to the company.
