Taiwanese makers delivered an estimated total of 103.54 million optical disc drives (ODDs) of all types in 2005 accounting for 38.5% of global shipments, a decrease from 2004, according to a report by DigiTimes Research. Taiwan is expected to account for 36.4% of global OOD shipments by 2008, noted the report.
The gradual decrease in Taiwan’s contribution to global shipments was due in part to many second-tier Taiwanese makers being forced out of the market due to intense competition, the report indicated.
Total global shipments for ODDs in 2006 will grow to 281.65 million units, due mainly to increasing demand for notebook PCs equipped with slim-type ODDs and DVD burners, the report pointed out. Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) and Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) were the world’s top two makers of slim-type ODDs, noted DigiTimes Research.
