Osram Opto Semiconductors has added a new line to its Golden Dragon LED series, Golden Dragon Argus LEDs, which provide uniform backlighting with color mixing for large-size display surfaces, said the company. The line is comprised of four LEDs — two green, one blue, and one red — in a lozenge form. Any number of these lozenges can be combined, either offset or in rows, to form scalable high-intensity backlighting systems, according to Osram.
For the Golden Dragon Argus, Osram has taken the Argus lens system familiar from radial LEDs and adapted it to SMT (surface mounted technology) LEDs, said the LED maker, adding that all four LED chips are manufactured with thin-film technology and deliver a high-luminous efficacy. The lenses spread the light emitted sideways over the surface instead of in a concentrated beam of light, noted the company.
Backlighting systems based on the Golden Dragon Argus achieve uniform distribution of light and an excellent mix of red, green and blue to produce white, stated the company, adding that the LEDs can be individually controlled to change the color tone. The coverage of the color triangle increases by more than 50% when compared to cold cathode fluorescence lamps (CCFLs), claims Osram, which noted that backlighting systems based on Golden Dragon Argus LEDs even exceed the standards of the National Television System Committee (NTSC).
With a package height of just 4mm, Golden Dragon Argus LEDs and lenses are much smaller than comparable systems so extremely low-profile LCD displays are possible, stated the LED maker. Since switching times are less than 100ns, the LEDs are suitable for sequential coloring, a process in which the three basic colors are pulsed at high frequency and in a particular sequence, without the need for special color filters, claimed Osram.
Osram’s Golden Dragon Argus LEDs comply with RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances) guidelines, and do not contain lead or mercury, stated the LED maker, adding that the LEDs are also vibration-proof and shockproof and give a lifetime of more than 50,000 hours.
