Supply is short for optical pick-up heads (PUHs) for use in Super Multi DVD burners because Japanese producer have not expanded production of laser diodes, a key component of PUHs, to meet increased demand for Super Multi DVD burners, according to local industry sources.
Despite the tight supply, the procurement cost of a Super Multi PUH remains unchanged at US$13-14, the sources indicated.
BenQ worries about whether the short supply of PUHs will affect its shipments of Super Multi DVD burners next quarter, said associate vice president Alpha Tsai for the company’s Storage Business Unit. Lite-On indicated that its inventory of Super Multi PUHs has dropped to a severely low level but has not yet influenced delivery.
