Nokia topped all handset vendors to capture a 25.1% share in Taiwan’s handset market in September, outperforming Motorola for the first time in the past eight months, according to sources at the local channel.
Motorola stepped down from the top ranking it has held since February of this year and saw its market share decline to 24.1% in September from 24.5% in August, said the sources.
Nokia beat Motorola last month due to brisk sales of Nokia’s low-priced 1600 model and the middle-level 6101 and 6102 models, the sources noted.
To maintain its lead, Nokia unveiled its latest fashion handset series, the L’Amour 7360, 7370 and 7380, in the local market on October 19. The new models will be available in the first quarter of 2006, according to the company.
Officials at Motorola declined to comment on the market report, but said the company will introduce 10 handsets in the fourth quarter, which will help boost sales in November and December.
South Korea vendor LG Electronics moved into the top-10 ranking in the local handset market for the first time in the past year, with its market sharing rising from 1.5% in August to 2.5% in September, according to market sources.
