Taiwan shipped 197,000 projectors in the second quarter of this year, representing a 114% annual jump, with sales value growing 79% on year to US$237 million, according to the Taiwan-based Market Intelligence Center (MIC).
Sony temporarily suspended supply of its HTPS (high-temperature poly-silicon) LCD projector panels in the first half of this year, causing several LCD projector makers to switch to DLP (digital light processing) chips or exit the projector market. DLP projectors accounted for 91% of total shipments in the second quarter, with BenQ and Coretronic taking 89% of the market, MIC reported.
Shipments were not affected by a tight supply of projector lamps, thanks to rapid capacity expansion from Japan-based Ushio, MIC said.
MIC expects shipments of Taiwan’s projectors to rise 49.2% to 294,000 units in the third quarter, with full year shipments reaching 800,000 units.
