Taiwan-based members of the design center alliance (DCA), which was formed by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), are planning to increase chip production at other foundries, according to sources at the companies.
Subject to capacity constraints, the DCA members have been requested by customers to place orders with other foundries. Their move is also prompted by suspicions that TSMC is providing preferential treatment to its affiliate Global Unichip, the sources added.
The sources project that the DCA members, except Global Unichip, will place over half of their orders to TSMC competitors by year-end.
Goyatek Technology expects to place orders for 0.25-micron production to Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS) and it will outsource orders for 0.35-micron production to Singapore-based Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and one or more Malaysia-based foundries.
Macrotech Semiconductor may outsource 0.50-micron based consumer ICs to China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC). Socle Technology will place orders with United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC).
