Taiwan-based Quanta Computer will ship 20-inch LCD TVs to Panasonic before the second quarter of this year, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times.
Quanta Computer declined to comment on the news but confirmed that it aims to capture a 5% share of the global FPD (flat-panel display) TV market by the fourth quarter of 2004.
The company established a display system division in the second quarter of 2003. The division produced 5,000 LCD TVs per month in the third quarter of 2003 and plans to ramp up monthly output to 10,000 units early this year, the company said in January.
Subsidiary Quanta Display, which supplies panels to Quanta Computer, plans to build a seventh-generation (7G) TFT LCD line. The company currently operates 3.5G and 5G lines.
Panasonic is a brand of Matsushita Electric Industrial, which has outsourced handset production to Quanta Computer for several years. About 60% of Quanta Computer’s forecast shipments of 10 million handsets this year will go to the group, including subsidiary Panasonic Mobile Communications.
