DDR400 to hit mainstream in 2Q next year

With Intel’s recent push to upgrade to DDR400-supporting chipsets, DDR400 is expected to become the mainstream standard starting in the second quarter of 2003.

The move towards DDR400, earlier regarded as a transitional product, comes as DDR266 continues as the current mainstream standard and DDR2 looks unlikely to cut in as the mainstream by the second half of 2003 as anticipated, said memory makers.

However, DDR400 is in tight supply currently, as DRAM makers had been hesitant to dive into production before Intel’s endorsement and suffering as well from their own problems with transitions from SDRAM to DDR production.

VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) had previously been the only two suppliers of DDR400, mainly to the clone market, and OEM adoption of the DDR400 standard had hinged on Intel’s moves.

Now, DRAM manufacturers and module makers alike are optimistic about the outlook for DDR400 in 2003.
