LG Electronics (LGE) recently announced it plans to invest one trillion won (about US$800 million) in its PDP (plasma display panel) TV business by 2005, according to the Korea Economic Daily.
LGE plans to increase the combined annual production capacity of its PDP TV factories at in South Korea (Kumi), China (Shenyang, Liaoning province) and Mexico (Reynosa) from 300,000 units this year to 1.2 million units by 2005.
The company also plans to expand its product line to include 37, 40, 42, 50 and 60-inch PDP TVs, increase its self-sufficiency in PDP TV production equipment and components from the current 50% to 90% and further improve PDP TV quality.
LGE aims to grab a 20% share in the global PDP TV market, which is predicted to increase from 700,000 units this year to 4.8 million units by 2005.
