Mustang supplies Thomson with Xbox outer cases

Yu-Hsiang Wang, Taipei

Mustang Industrial, a Taiwan-based metal stamping manufacturer, projects its case shipments to Thomson Multimedia will reach three million sets or NT$90 million in 2001. The shipments, which will go to supply the Xbox, include seven components or 90% of the game console’s outer case. With the Xbox entering the market this fall, the Taiwanese manufacturer predicts shipments to Thomson will increase to six million sets annually in the future.

Mustang’s wholly owned subsidiary in China recently received CD-ROM, CD-RW and DVD-ROM component orders from Taiwan’s Acer Communication & Multimedia (ACM) and Asustek Computer. The contracts should generate NT$200 million in revenue for the company.

Its first-quarter revenue fell 25.66% year-on-year to NT$147 million. The company attributed the decline to the sluggish CD-ROM market and the decrease and delay of stamping orders. Its April revenue could drop slightly from March’s NT$47.16 million, but current orders point to improvements in May.
