Samsung has been the biggest supporter for AMOLED panels. Industry sources stated there will be numerous mobile phone vendors adopting AMOLED panels in the second half of the year in order to differentiate their products with Apple's iPhone4.
Industry sources pointed out that many international firms will begin to adopt AMOLED panels because of its high brightness characteristic. However, the technology faces many obstacles such as high costs, brightness distribution and color rendering.
Samsung has been implementing AMOLED panels into the Galaxy series of smartphones and tablet PCs. Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) has began production of AMOLED panels with the 5.5G production lines in May to further increase the penetration of AMOLED panels.
According to industry sources, AMOLED began with small-size products such as 2-inch mobile gaming devices and gradually expanded to small- and medium-size products. Most panel makers expect the adoption of AMOLED panels to expand mainly in high-end smartphone devices in 2011 to differentiate from the Apple iPhone4, which adopts in-plane switching (IPS) LCD panels.
