China pushes AI agent interoperability and space computing at WAIC 2026

China unveiled two major AI initiatives at the 2026 World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, highlighting efforts to standardize AI agent collaboration while laying the groundwork for space-based computing infrastructure.

A coalition led by the East China Branch of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) released the Initiative on Collaborative Development and Governance of AI Agent Interoperability, addressing growing concerns over incompatible agent protocols, unclear accountability, and fragmented ecosystems.

According to News Time, the initiative was jointly issued with CAICT's Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute, the Beijing Institute for AI Safety and Governance, Huawei, Alibaba, Ant Group, the Cloud Security Alliance, Shanghai Mobile, and Shanghai Telecom.

The proposal outlines four principles for AI agent development: establishing unified interoperability standards, clarifying responsibilities to strengthen governance, maintaining an open ecosystem that supports small and medium-sized enterprises, and fostering industry-wide collaboration. The organizers said these measures are intended to build a standardized, secure, trustworthy, and open AI agent ecosystem.

The announcement reflects China's broader push to accelerate commercial AI adoption while ensuring interoperability and governance keep pace with increasingly autonomous AI systems.

China also showcased ambitions beyond terrestrial computing, with experts arguing that future AI development will require computing infrastructure in space.

According to Guancha, Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Jianyu Wang said surging demand from communications, navigation, Earth observation, and AI computing is driving the evolution of computing resources from the ground into orbit. He argued that space-based computing could overcome constraints such as energy consumption, land availability, and cooling requirements faced by conventional data centers.

Wang said China has already established a complete industrial chain covering launch vehicles, satellites, and space applications, providing a foundation for orbital computing networks. He also highlighted the country's advances in reusable rockets and large-scale satellite deployment, which could lower the cost of building computing infrastructure in space.

The remarks came as China's AI industry continues to expand rapidly. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country's core AI industry exceeded CNY1.2 trillion (approx. US$177.2 billion) in 2025, with more than 6,200 enterprises spanning technologies, frameworks, foundation models, and applications. The ministry said future policies will focus on strengthening AI infrastructure, expanding application scenarios, and fostering internationally competitive AI companies.
