SK Hynix’s oligopolistic advantage in HBM had diminished in the third quarter of 2025, and memory competition will expand from HBM to next-generation products.
Abstract

DIGITIMES observed that the combined memory revenue (covering only DRAM and NAND Flash businesses) of the global top-3 memory makers, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology, nearly reached US$40 billion in the second quarter of 2025.

Although memory demand in the third quarter of 2025 may have been impacted by the reciprocal tariffs of the US, the ongoing AI boom still maintained revenue growth for the top-3 makers, with total revenue projected to reach US$43.7 billion.

On the process technology front, memory manufacturers focused on 1c/1γnm DRAM and multi-level NAND flash technologies. In terms of products, besides high-bandwidth memory (HBM), GDDR7 and small compressed additional memory modules (SOCAMM) have also become competitive product segments among memory makers, reflecting an expansion of competition beyond just HBM.
