The output value of Taiwan's computer manufacturing industry reached NT$321.5 billion (US$10.53 billion) in 2022, a new high since 2003, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

Due to escalating trade tensions between the United States and China, Taiwan-based companies have increasingly relocated their server and high-end notebook assembly lines from China to Taiwan, contributing to the overall output value of Taiwan's computer manufacturing industry last year, said MOEA.

Following the NT$438.1 billion record peak in Taiwan's computer manufacturing industry in 2000, companies gradually moved production lines offshore to cut costs, MOEA indicated. Taiwan's output value fell gradually until it slid below NT$100 billion in 2006.

The outward shift of industry diminishes export momentum and investment rates, causing fiscal problems for governments as well as wage and private consumption growth stagnation, MOEA said. Thus, bringing back high-end manufacturing and assembly firms is always been a top priority.

The output value of Taiwan's computer manufacturing industry rebounded above NT$100 billion in 2018, and climbed 80.4% to NT$189.5 billion in 2019 - the highest on-year rise since 2012, according to MOEA. The industry output value has since seen steady growth, reaching above NT$300 billion in 2022.

Northern Taiwan is home to more than 80% of Taiwan's computer manufacturing plants. Taiwan's computer manufacturing industry covers products spanning from PCs, notebooks, servers, motherboards and industrial PCs.
