Quanta Computer expects its notebook shipments to grow sequentially in the third quarter and may be the only ODM to see increases with Chromebooks being the key growth driver.
Quanta shipped 5.2 million notebooks in June, up 10% on month with the volumes in the second quarter nearly doubled sequentially to 14.5 million units.
Quanta reported consolidated revenues of NT$93.47 billion (US$3.14 billion) for June, up 0.1% on month and 18.4% on year with those for the first half of 2020 slipping 1.4% on year to come to NT$460.48 billion. Consolidated sales for the second quarter picked up 42% sequentially and almost 10% on year to NT$270.22 billion.
Compal Electronics delivered a total of four million PCs in June, and the second-quarter volume reached 12.5 million units, up 60.26% sequentially. Inventec shipped 5.7 million PCs and Wistron 5.2 million notebooks in the second quarter both growing sharply from a quarter ago.
Compal registered consolidated revenues of NT$81.7 billion for June, down 6.8% on month and 5% on year. Consolidated sales for the second quarter grew 44.8% sequentially and 4.4% on year to NT$263.65 billion, those of first-half 2020 fell 3% on year to NT$445.7 billion.
For the third quarter, Compal estimates its PC shipments to slip 12% sequentially to 11 million units while Wistron has anticipated a 5-10% sequential drop. Inventec expects its shipments in the third quarter to dip 14% sequentially to reach 4.9 million units, similar to the level seen in the same quarter a year ago.
All brand vendors are set to release new notebooks equipped with Intel's upcoming CPUs to be unveiled in the second half of 2020.
Quanta is likely to be the only ODM to see sequential shipment growth in the third quarter because of robust Chromebook orders.
Chromebooks accounted for over 30% of Quanta's overall notebook shipments in the second quarter, up from less than 20% in the first, the company has disclosed.
Some market observers pointed out that demand for enterprise notebooks from the work-from-home user group is decelerating in the third quarter as both Compal and Inventec, the key suppliers of enterprise devices for Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP), are experiencing shipment declines.
However, demand from the study-from-home market continues rising with brisk orders for Chromebooks, said the observers.
Acer chairman and CEO Jason Chen also recently revealed that only 30% of demand in the US study-from-home market has been satisfied and brand vendors will be busy trying to fulfill demand from the remaining 70%, or about 60-70 million students. In addition to the US, brand vendors have also seen strong Chromebook orders from Japan, Southeast Asia and Europe.
Acer has reported consolidated revenues of NT$25.67 billion for June, up 27.2% on month and 4.9% on year. Consolidated sales for the second quarter reached NT$65.6 billion, up 34.3% sequentially, and for the first-half 2020 sales arrived at NT$114.46 billion, up 4.2% on year.
