Taiwan-based polymer materials supplier U-Best Polymer Industry has come with clear hard coat films for flexible OLED panel applications with volume shipments likely to kick off in the fourth quarter of 2019, according to company president NH Huang.

U-Best has been developing hard coat films mixed with colorless polyimide (CPI) films using formulas and technologies transferred from the government-backed Industry Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Huang said.

Flexible OLED panels with a protective layer of hard coat films are viable for folding/unfolding for over 200,000 times, Huang claimed.

U-Best has delivered its hard coat films in small volumes to clients including OLED touch module and LCD panel makers, polarizer suppliers, and handset OEMs for trial production and yield testing, Huang said, adding that a total of six flat panel makers in China have been using its sample products.

With prospects that more foldable smartphones are likely to become available in 2020, upstream materials and components suppliers are expected to benefit from the emerging trend in the fourth quarter of 2019, industry sources commented.
