Chunghwa Telecom expects profits from 4G to come ahead of schedule

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) started 4G commercial operations in Taiwan in late May 2014 and originally forecast that EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization) would turn positive after three years and net operating profits would begin after four years, but now expects positive EBITDA and net operating profits in 2016 and 2017 based on current operating conditions, according to the company.

The earlier than originally expected positive EBITDA and net operating profits are based on the assumption that CHT maintains a market share of 40% in total number of 4G subscribers, CHT said.

CHT chairman Rick Tsai will lead a delegation to attend the Mobile World Congress 2015 to take place in Barcelona, Spain, during March 2-5 and the delegation will pay attention to developments of OTT (over the top) business and 5G technology, the company indicated. CHT's telecom laboratories have assigned a staff of about 30 members specifically for 5G R&D, CHT said.
