Taiwan market: Ambit 4G infrastructure plan raises security concern over Huawei equipment

Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) has not yet approved the infrastructure construction plan proposed by Ambit Microsystems, one of the country's six 4G mobile communication licensees, because the firm's plan to adopt base station equipment produced by China-based Huawei Technologies has raised national security concerns, according to NCC.

The concern is in tandem with the US and UK governments' bans on companies procuring ICT equipment from Huawei due to risks to national security, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

The other five licensees have not listed Huawei among their equipment suppliers and their 4G network establishment plans have obtained NCC approval, the sources indicated.

If Ambit's plan is approved, the others are expected to follow suit by procuring 4G equipment from Huawei, the sources said.
