China Mobile has set a goal of selling 120 million TD-SCDMA mobile terminal devices in 2013, with 50% to be customized models and reference design-based models each and 80-90% to be smartphones, the company disclosed at the Qualcomm Reference Design (QRD) Summit taking place in Shenzhen, southern China, on January 23.
The China-based telecom carrier said it offered 451 models of TD-SCDMA mobile devices for contract sale in 2012 and sold more than 60 million units in excess of the target of 55-60 million units. Of the models available in fourth-quarter 2012, 94.4% were smartphones, it noted.
China Mobile expects to continue to be the market leader in the entry-level mobile device segment in China and hopes to have breakthroughs in the mid-range CNY700-1,500 (US$112-241) segment and the high-end CNY1,500-3,000 segment in 2013.
China Mobile expects all of its mid-range and high-end TD-SCDMA smartphones to be dual-mode models supporting WCDMA to enable roaming in overseas locations in 2013. It said it will offer TD-SCDMA/CDMA dual-mode smartphones in 2013.
