Storage solution supplier Promise launches new private cloud solution

Taiwan-based RAID storage solution supplier Promise Technology has cooperated with Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry to launch on November 16 its SmartApp cloud storage service system.

Although demand for private cloud systems has turned weak in the fourth quarter due to a shortage of hard drives, since demand is simply being postponed, the company expects demand will surge by the end of the first quarter in 2012.

SmartApp is a hybrid cloud system based on Intel processors and can equip as many as six SATA hard drives to provide 50-200 employees with 50-150GB of storage capacity each.

Since most first-tier network storage system providers are mainly focusing on public cloud solutions, SmartApp will target mainly small-to-medium enterprises, government and education units.

In the third quarter, Promise had net profits of NT$35 million (US$1.16 million) with EPS of NT$0.24; however, the company still suffered from net losses of NT$157 million for the first three quarters of 2011 combined with EPS of negative NT$1.08.
