With passive component makers seeing better-than-expected performance, upstream material suppliers Laser Tek and Leatec Fine Ceramics have both expressed optimism for fourth-quarter 2009 and early 2010.

Laser Tek, which mainly supplies SMD (surface-mount-device) packaging materials, said passive component customers have stepped up their pace of orders while holding more optimistic outlooks for 2010.

Laser Tek saw revenues increase 24% on month to NT$65 million (US$2.02 million) in November, which also marked its sixth consecutive month of on-year revenue growth, according to the company. Consolidated revenues for the month grew 6.9% sequentially to NT$148 million, the highest so far in 2009.

Alumina substrate maker Leatec, which has diversified into producing heat sink substrates for LED-backlight applications, generated revenues of NT$37 million in November, up 37.4% on month and 125.8% on year. It saw consolidated revenues for the month increase 14.8% sequentially to NT$62 million on demand from chip resistor customers and higher product ASPs, according to the company.

Leatec was quoted in previous reports saying that its order visibility has extended to the first quarter of 2010.
