Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has reportedly landed micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) orders from US-based Analog Devices (ADI), with the orders being for around 2,000-3,000 wafers per month, according to sources in the industry.
The orders will consist of two products. The first being G-Sensors, which are used in the Nintendo Wii controller and the second being for MEMS microphones, a product ADI has recently become involved with. Although initially ADI will only outsource around a few hundred wafers to TSMC, after the fourth quarter of this year the volume is expected to increase to around 3,000 units, the sources noted.
TSMC is planning to use its 6-inch Fab 2 to manufacture for ADI, but if the orders continue to increase, the foundry will also produce some of the product at its Fab 3.
TSMC declined to comment.
