The two leading local-brand notebook vendors - Asustek Computer and Acer - together shipped a total of 530,000 notebooks in Taiwan in 2006, accounting for a 69% market share, according to sources at the companies.

Asustek led Acer with its notebook shipments totaling 280,000 units for a 37-38% market share, said sources at Asustek, which had previously projected its notebook shipments in the local market to reach 300,000-320,000 units in 2006.

For this year, Asustek expects to ship 350,000 notebooks in the local market, noted the company sources.

Acer shipped 250,000 notebooks in Taiwan last year and accounted for 32% market share, which was in line with the company's expectations, according to sources at Acer.

Acer plans to boost its sales in the local market by offering a complete lineup of notebooks, including models to be priced at NT$45,000-55,000 (US$1,372-1,677) for the high-end segment and others to be priced at NT$25,000-26,000 for the entry-level segment, said Scott Lin, president of Acer's Taiwan and Hong Kong operations.

Acer also will strengthen its cooperation with system integrators to expand its penetration in the business sector, Lin added.
