The glass substrate plant of Japan-based Asahi Glass at the Yunlin Base of the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) will suspend production by three months due to problems with its furnace, according to the Chinese-language Apple Daily. The plant provides substrates mainly for fifth-generation (5G) and 6G TFT LCD plants in Taiwan and South Korea.
Asahi Taiwan will send representatives to customers to explain the situation and plans to ask for help from other plants, the paper said, adding that each of the substrate plants from Asahi Taiwan has about eight million square feet of annual capacity, with Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT), Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), Quanta Display and TPO Displays being major Taiwan-based customers.
CPT was quoted as saying that the suspension will have a limited impact on Taiwan-based makers since most of the panel makers have two to three glass substrate suppliers.
