Matsushita leads PDP shipments in February, says Displaybank

Global PDP (plasma display panel) shipments increased 1% sequentially to 817,000 units in February and Matsushita Electric Industrial moved to lead the market, according to Displaybank.

The Japan-based maker took the lead by shipping more than 260,000 units, followed by January's leader LG Electronics (LGE) with more than 240,000 units. Next came Samsung SDI with 200,000 units, then Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display (FHP) and Pioneer, posting almost 50,000 units each, the research firm said.

The most notable change in the shipment breakdown is the continued increase in the proportion of HD (high-definition) units. The research firm indicated that this was largely due to LGE and Samsung SDI, which have turned their strategies into increased HD production and fewer SD models.

Some panel makers said the PDP market is faced with a shortage, but most companies seem to see balanced supply and demand. Panel makers hope to maintain this for the first half of 2006 and then see rising demand in the second half. Displaybank predicts that global PDP panel shipments will reach 12 million units in 2006.
