LG Electronics (LGE) announced the availability of three mobile-phone models, the T5100, L3100 and L1100, in Taiwan on November 6. The T5100 features the company’s first model equipped with a 1.3-megapixel camera.
LGE will begin marketing its WCDMA models in Taiwan next year, according to Dawsen Tang, director of the mobile-phone department at LGE in Taiwan.
LGE’s shipments in the third quarter grew 19% on-quarter, with two-thirds of the shipments coming from the CDMA-phone segment, said Tang. The South Korean handset vendor plans to combine its CDMA, GSM/GPRS and WCDMA R&D teams at its Yeongdungpo-Gu, Seoul production base by December, for a combined head-count of 3,500, Tang stated. Lag time between the launch of CDMA phones and their GSM/GPRS counterparts, which is currently around one year, could be shortened by at least six months, Tang added.
A recent report from IDC showed that LGE ranked as the fifth-largest handset vendor worldwide in the third quarter of this year, with a 7.2% market share and shipments totaling 11.8 million units.
LGE plans to increase its mobile-phone production in 2005, from around 45 million units this year to 70 million, according to a November 5 press release. In addition, the South Korean handset vendor also forecast its mobile-phone shipments will grow 40-50% next year, up from 43.5 million in 2004.
