BenQ forecasts 20-30% sales drop in China in 2Q

BenQ expects its sales in China to decline 20-30%, excluding seasonal factors, in the second quarter compared with the first quarter, due to the SARS epidemic.

The company said at an investors conference yesterday that weakening China sales will dampen its global sales in the second quarter by 5-6%.

According to its unaudited sales performance, the company booked NT$26.99 billion in global consolidated revenues in the first quarter, of which sales from the Greater China region contributed 33%. The company expects flat second-quarter revenues, coming in between 2% below and 6% above first-quarter revenues.

The company said the impact of SARS in other Asian markets besides China is not so significant, and therefore it does not see the need to revise its 2003 financial forecast.
