Molicel powers McMurtry Speirling to ultra-high speed

Taiwan-based E-One Moli Energy (Molicel) has signed a strategic technical partnership with hypercar brand McMurtry Automotive to supply ternary lithium batteries for high-end electric vehicles.

Molicel, a subsidiary of Taiwan Cement Corp (TCC), is building a plant in Kaohsiung, sourthern Taiwan to produce lithium batteries for high-end hypercar and electric racing car brands.

The NT$12 billion (US$402.7 million) factory is scheduled to begin operation in 2023. Molicel's target clients are hypercars and racing cars worth over US$500,000.

Powered by Molicel's ultra-high power cell, it takes less than 1.5 seconds for a McMurtry's Speirling to accelerate from 0 to 60mph, or 96kph, with unique fan powered downforce of over 2000kg, according to Molicel.

The ultra-high power cell has only 50% internal resistance compared to other batteries available in the market. Moicel said the power cell could reach 250-300kph with lasting range.

Unlike batteries for passenger electric vehicles (EV), the battery for hypercars requires 10 times higher energy density.

Battery temperature does not rise as fast when internal resistance is reduced, so the battery module could be simpler and lighter, said the company.

Molicel's future developments include an even higher power cell capable of delivering 5C fast charge (6 minutes to charge up 50% capacity). These could feature in future McMurtry and customer applications.
