AMD completes acquisition of ZT Systems

AMD has completed its acquisition of ZT Systems, aiming to strengthen its AI infrastructure offerings, the company announced on March 31. The deal will integrate ZT Systems' design teams into AMD's Data Center Solutions unit, enhancing AI system deployment while paving the way for strategic partnerships in US-based data center manufacturing.

According to a press release on March 31, AMD completed its acquisition of ZT Systems. AMD said the acquisition will facilitate a new range of AI solutions combining AMD's CPU, GPU, networking silicon, and open-source AMD ROCm software while enhancing the deployment of AMD-powered AI infrastructure optimized for cloud use.

The press release added that the deal is projected to be accretive on a non-GAAP basis by the end of 2025. ZT Systems' top design teams will integrate into AMD's Data Center Solutions unit under EVP Forrest Norrod. Additionally, AMD is exploring strategic partnerships to acquire ZT Systems' US-based data center infrastructure manufacturing business in 2025.

Norrod emphasized that streamlining the design and deployment of AI systems will give customers a competitive edge. He described the acquisition of ZT Systems as a key step in AMD's AI strategy, enabling the provision of tailored training and inferencing solutions ready to scale. This move leverages an open ecosystem approach, integrating open-source software and standard networking technologies. Norrod also welcomed the ZT Systems team, highlighting that this partnership will enhance customer options and speed to market.

Frank Zhang, former Founder and CEO of ZT Systems, has joined AMD as senior vice president of ZT Manufacturing, reporting to Norrod to oversee the divestiture of the manufacturing business. Doug Huang, former President of ZT Systems, is now senior vice president of Data Center Platform Engineering at AMD, also reporting to Norrod. He will lead design and customer enablement teams, collaborating with the AMD Data Center Solutions unit and AI Group to expedite data center AI solutions.
